Project details

The power plant currently has a capacity of 220MW divided over two 110MW units, with a further 400 MW, divided over two 200MW units, on the way. It uses a 275 kV transmission network to deliver an electricity supply of approximately 2,803GWh/year [4]. This energy makes its way to a number of regencies in Aceh – including Aceh Jaya, West Aceh, Southwest Aceh, and Nagan Raya – although this has recently been called into question (see case description) [20] [21]. The two units currently in operation use an average of 50,000 tons of coal/month, 90% of which is shipped from Kalimantan to the plant, with the other 10% coming from the more local Mifa Bersaudara coal mine [18].

Briefly explain:There has been significant opposition towards the plant (especially the new units in construction) on behalf of the local population. However, the plant has not shown much willingness to engage with them or their demands. While locals will probably keep protesting, it is unclear how much influence this will have on the plant management’s decisions.
